Western Illinois University GLBT faculty and staff members gather along with Allies to celebrate National Coming Out Day.President Alvin Goldfarb signed the following proclamation:WHEREAS, Western Illinois University has a policy on nondiscrimination that includes sexual orientation; and, WHEREAS, it is indisputable that Western Illinois University educates and employs gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered, students, faculty, staff and their allies; and, WHEREAS, Western Illinois University has a strong and long-standing commitment to building and nurturing a campus community that celebrates and embraces a free exchange of ideas, differences and diversity; and, WHEREAS, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered and allies contribute to a more diverse community at Western Illinois University; and, WHEREAS, in order to enhance diversity, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered, and allies must feel secure enough about the environment to be visible and unthreatened; and, WHEREAS, the creation of an environment that promotes visibility of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered, and allies is an issue of cultural diversity; and WHEREAS, Global Challenges and Personal Responsibilities: Cultural Diversity is the University theme for the 2006-07 academic year; THEREFORE, I, Al Goldfarb, President of Western Illinois University, enthusiastically Proclaim October 11, 2006 as National Coming Out Day, and urge all members of our campus community to participate in the scheduled activities and events.
