Editor's Forward

On behalf of the North American Accounting Society (NAAS) Board and Officers, I would like to express our gratitude to Western Illinois University and the Journal of Contemporary Business Issues for allowing the opportunity to present this issue of accounting related papers. The 2017 NAAS Special Issue was a privilege to edit; all papers originally presented at a Chicago Illinois spring meeting underwent a separate submission and review process to eventually take form within this publication.

Like most endeavors, this one came to realization only through the efforts and support of many individuals. First and foremost, sincere appreciation is extended to journal editor Dr. James L. Patterson of Western Illinois University for his support in facilitating a smooth process. The members of the review board for this issue are listed separately; this is the group that with generous spirit did the heavy lifting for this issue through their willingness to share of time and expertise. With the diversity of articles submitted related to various aspects of accounting, they made my job easy, and I am indebted to each of them. Finally thank you to the collegial accounting educators who comprise the NAAS group. We light up the Palmer House with our camaraderie in the meetings there each spring, but the special issue allowed for continued learning, growth, and interactions beyond that time and space. Please enjoy these six articles.

The issue begins with Attracting the Best and the Brightest: The Effect of Employer Support on Organization Attraction in Public Accounting by Ben Huegel. In times of what has been referred to as a pipeline shortage to the profession, this article used a quasi-experimental design with students who rated their attraction to an organization, relative to different forms of support.

Next follows Mostafa Maksy’s work in the article Is Free Cash Flow Value Relevant? The Case of the U.S. Consumer Staples Industry Sector. This study aimed to identify the accounting definition of free cash flow most relevant to investors in that particular industry sector.

The third article investigated the impact of a recent public policy initiative within a particular industry. This is Proposed Border Tax Adjustment – Implications to the U.S. Auto Industry by Anthony Narsing, Mimi Ford, and Troy Sullivan.

The Information Content of Disclosure Controls and Procedures Deficiencies by Essam Elshafie addressed the market reactions to management reports on disclosure controls and procedures (DCP) related to SOX Section 302(a)(4)(b). DCP reports are not to be confused with internal control over financial reporting; this work provides evidence related to investor reliance on external audit assurance.

Susan Moncada shared her recommendations and tips in implementing a classroom project that integrates technology to adapt a time-honored government accounting assignment in her work: The Comprehensive Annual Financial Report: A Governmental Accounting Structured Wiki Project.

Finally the issue concludes with an article that exposes shortcomings of the traditional accounting classroom pedagogy. A teaching innovation is addressed from all angles in Questioning the Flip: The Hidden Dilemmas of the Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread by Timothy Fogarty.
