M. Gretchen and David A. Miller Scholarship

HISTORY:
The  David and Gretchen Miller Scholarship Fund was established December 17, 2003  by Gretchen and David Miller.  David Miller and Gretchen Bergschneider met in 1971 while attending Western Illinois University and were married on December 23, 1972. 

Gretchen (Bergschneider) Miller is from Alexander, Illinois, and graduated from WIU in May of 1972 with a B.S. in Education.  Gretchen taught elementary grades (preschool through 8) in Illinois and Iowa.  She then worked within the Educational Department of their family-owned business, as well as being an important member of the Senior Management Team at Miller Beauty Supply.

David Miller is from Burlington, Iowa, and graduated from WIU in March of 1973 with a B.B. in Marketing.  David worked as a sales consultant, educational director, and vice president of sales and marketing for Miller Beauty Supply until 1984.  In 1985, he and his wife purchased the business and David became President and CEO.  Sales grew from less than $3 million in 1985 to more than $22 million in 1997, when the couple sold the company.

This scholarship will be awarded to full-time (minimum 12 semester hours) junior and senior level students.

CRITERIA:

  • Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.25 or better.
  • Seeking to obtain a teaching certificate through the WIU Teacher Education Program.
  • Earned a minimum of 60 semester hours (junior status) at Western Illinois University.
  • Preference will be given to applicant(s)who have demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activity in a leadership position.

TERMS: Award amount varies based on annual interest earned on endowment.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Selection of the recipient will be coordinated by Office of Teacher Education Scholarship Committee.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: March 15

RENEWABLE: Yes.  Applicant must reapply, after which his/her application will be put into the pool of applicants to be evaluated by the selection committee.
