Simpson Receives Excellence Award

May 11, 2009

University Housing and Dining Services recognized Dr. Alphonso Simpson, Jr. with the Honoring Our Professor’s Excellence Award. The award was designed to recognize WIU faculty members who are committed to student learning. Several students wrote very complimentary nominations. Some of their quotes follow:

“He doesn’t care if you are white, black or Hispanic.”

“He inspired me to focus on my studies and to also get involved on campus. I met him when I came to visit the campus and he is one of the reasons why I chose WIU.”

“Dr. Simpson has had such an impact on my experience here as a freshman…He sincerely cares about all of his students and really understands the material he teaches. He gives all the help students need and is involved around campus…His classes are challenging but it is always worth it because he makes sure we understand the material instead of making us memorize. He is always there for students and gives extra time to help.”

“Professor Simpson was the first professor to make me feel comfortable enough in a college classroom. He opened my eyes to different issues and solutions dealing with race…I now have a better understanding of how others feel about my race and they have a better understanding of how I feel about theirs; because of this I have made new friends and have a better outlook on life. On top of that, Dr. Simpson has taught me about the many contributions African Americans have made in helping our nation become better equipped and a more evolved nation. I understand more about my history and I am happier about my reason for choosing WIU.”

Dr. Alphonso Simpson, Jr. came to WIU in August 2000 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American Studies. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006. Simpson earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wyoming; his Master of Music Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia; and his Bachelor of Science from Alabama State University.

The Department of African American Studies is pleased to congratulate Dr. Simpson on his positive influence on our student body.
