English Language Conference

Quad Cities Initiative Office

November 3-4, 2017 (QC Campus)

This fall Western Illinois University-Quad Cities in cooperation with the East Moline School District, Moline/ Coal Valley School District, and the Rock Island School District will sponsor an English Language Conference for Illinois and Iowa administrators and teachers (k-12). This program is designed to touch on multiple facets of working with English Language Learners, for teachers who are not only in English Language Learner classrooms, but those who have an English Language learner in a general classroom setting. Sessions include “The Current Status of English Language and New Developments,” “Beginning Spanish for Teachers,” “Strategies for Literacy,” “Technology in the Classroom,” and a “Pre-Conference Refugee Simulation for Educators.” 

The keynote speaker for the event is Libia Gil, the Illinois State Board of Education’s Chief Education Officer. Libia Gil has served as the Assistant Deputy Secretary and Director for the Office of English Language Acquisition at the U.S. Department of Education under U.S. Secretaries of Education Arne Duncan and John King. In addition, she was Vice-President for Practice at the Collaborative for Academics, Social and Emotional Learning in Chicago. She has been a Senior Fellow and Managing Director at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), where she developed and co-led the AIR Center for English Language Learners. To view a tentative program schedule, please click on the following link: EL Conference Schedule

The Fall Leadership Conference (FLC) is a one day event that inspires leaders around campus to connect with others and will be held on Saturday, November 11th, 2017 in the University Union. Check in for participants is between 8:30 - 9:00 am, followed by a Welcome, Breakout Sessions, Lunch, and our Keynote Speaker!

RPTA Professional Development Conference

You are cordially invited to join the Department in celebrating its 50th Anniversary at its annual professional development conference. The conference will begin with a keynote speech. Sessions 1-3 will take place on the second floor of the University Union. The event will conclude with our annual department awards luncheon in the University Union. At this luncheon, we will also celebrate the contributions of individuals and groups that have contributed to RPTA's past and future successes.

This business casual event will provide opportunities for alumni and friends to engage with current faculty and students in a professional and festive environment. The cost for faculty, staff, alumni, and friends is $15; the cost for students is $5.

PreK – 8 Science Update Conference

Every spring since 1985 the Science Education Center has hosted the Annual PreK-8 Science Update Conference.  The purpose of this local conference is to bring teachers together to share activities and ideas for improving the teaching of science in preschool through 8th grade.  Presenters at this conference includes outstanding science teachers who are willing to share their expertise.  The conference also includes commercial exhibitors who share what is new in the area of science education.
