Eligibility for Services

In order to be eligible for University Counseling Center (UCC) services, a student must be currently enrolled at Western Illinois University (WIU), be taking a minimum of 3 academic credits at WIU, and be working toward a degree.  Exceptions can only be made with the approval of the Director.

Faculty and staff taking classes at WIU are considered employees and will be referred to the Employee Assistance Program or other resources for counseling services.  WIU employees may receive counseling assistance on an emergency basis only followed by a referral to an appropriate health/mental health care provider or resource.

During the summer semester, a student who is enrolled for the following fall semester may receive counseling services without being enrolled in summer school.  However, this is dependent upon availability of counseling services during the summer session.

Limitations

Some students' needs go beyond what can be provided for on campus and will be referred to a higher level of care off campus. All decisions about the provision of counseling services to a student will be made solely on the basis of clinical judgment and the availability of necessary resources and are not based on the student's race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, disability, or status as a disabled veteran.

The counseling services offered through the UCC are limited to "brief, short term" counseling, which typically consists of less than ten counseling sessions per academic year.  The University Counseling Center staff has the right to modify the delivery of counseling services beyond the ten-session guideline after consultation with and approval from the UCC Director.
