This multi-phase project began with a building assessment and programming study completed by FGM Architects. The study included an assessment of the existing conditions along with an outline of the direction of the University’s Union’s future and a multi-phase redevelopment. Based on the recommendations of the building assessment and programming study, the executive committee has identified three priority items that should be addressed in the initial renovation project. First priority was given to the most heavily used areas of the union including the Murray Street Café, LaMoine Room, and North Terrace. Next will be the consolidation of student activities offices in the space currently occupied by the bowling alley. Finally, the Murray street entrance and stairwell will be reconfigured, and the concourse area renovated.
September 2012 - The design team, along with the executive committee, have completed the Schematic Design phase of the project and are currently working in the Design Development Phase. The architects are working hard on the documents and are scheduled to issue WIU the Design Development documents during the first week of October. We are still on schedule to Issue for Bids the beginning of January.
April 2012 - The WIU Board of Trustees approved $1.1 million for design of Phase I at its March 30, 2012 meeting. Design of Phase I by architecture and engineering consultants begins April 27, 2012.
March 2013 - Bids for electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation and general construction were received the week of March 4th. The bids are currently under review and subject to approval by the board of trustees at the March 29th Board of Trustees meeting.
Some changes have started taking place at the University Union including tile removal in the Murray Street Cafe and Food Court Area. We will begin a complete asbestos abatement in the Lamoine Room starting mid April and construction staging will begin mid May.
After receiving BOT approval March 29, 2013 bids have been awarded to the following:
General Contractor: Leander Construction - $2,113,900.00
Plumbing Contractor: Warner Plumbing - $239,900.00
Electrical Contractor: Foster Jacob - $1,581,540.00
Heating Contractor: Ryan & Associates - $2,342,000.00
Ventilation Contractor: Johnson Contracting - $476,780.00
