Course Description

Ethical, Social and Legal Issues in the Digital World. (3) (Global Issues)  Study of challenges and implications of computer technology for users and IT professionals. Topics include global perspectives on ethical, social, and legal issues in software quality, freedom of expression, privacy, intellectual property, hacking, and computer crime. BGS online writing course. Prerequisite: junior standing.

Learning outcomes

  • Develop a better understanding of social, legal, and privacy issues as they relate to the digital world
  • Develop a better understanding of personal ethics through introspection, investigation of different countries/cultures/societies, and critical writing assignments 
  • Develop a better understanding of professional ethics through examinations of codes of ethics of professional organizations. 
  • Be familiar with ethical, social and legal issues and cultural differences surrounding the use of technology, specifically computers, equipment, equipment under computer control, and the Internet. 
  • Develop a better understanding of the impact of the information technologies have had on the globalization of the world. 
  • Develop a better understanding of the following: global information technology issues, global technology laws, global e-business, global education, and the gap between the information rich and the information poor.
