Western Illinois University - Policy

Western Illinois University is committed to providing accessible web resources to the students, faculty, staff, and other users of its web resources. To this end, a web accessibility policy was approved in October 2007. (Web Accessibility Policy) The policy outlines how we prioritize the review the tens of thousands of web pages that comprise the University website, and how those who are responsible for identified priority websites must develop implementation plans for ensuring accessibility of these websites, and if requested by a user, provide website information in an alternative format in a timely manner until the identified website meets accessibility guidelines.

Illinois State Law - Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act

On August 20, 2007 the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) was signed into law. The guidelines related to web development became effective August 20, 2008. The Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act requires Illinois agencies and universities to ensure that their web sites, systems, and other information technologies are accessible to people with disabilities. The IITAA requires the State to establish and follow specific, functional accessibility standards and to address accessibility proactively.

Specific implementation guidelines related to web-based information and applications were developed as part of the IITAA. These guidelines outline specific development practices and standards that must be followed. Information on the IITAA is available on an Illinois Department of Human Services website related to IITAA Initiatives.

The following offer more detailed information in IITAA implementation:
