Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences

Biology is one of the most basic fields of science, and has direct application to humans. Our continued existence on the planet Earth depends on how we resolve biological problems. Biology ranges in scale from biochemical processes inside individual cells to complex multicellular organisms to populations of organisms to ecosystems to the entire planet.

Majors are offered in Biology (with options in Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Medical Sciences*, and Science/Biology Teacher Certification) and Clinical Laboratory Science leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Students intending to pursue medical careers should choose the Bachelor of Science in Biology. Minors are offered in Zoology, Botany, and Microbiology. An interdisciplinary Functional Morphology and Evolutionary Anatomy (FMEA) minor between the departments of Biological Sciences and Sociology/Anthropology is offered for students interested in a strong emphasis in animal and human anatomy.**

*You cannot enroll in the medical sciences option unless you have a minimum GPA of 2.75. A psychology or chemistry minor is required with this option in order to prepare students for application to professional schools, such as

• medical schools
• dental schools
• optometry schools
• physical and occupational therapy programs
• veterinarian programs
