Jazz Scholarships

These scholarships may apply to any jazz student
in the School of Music who meets the stated criteria.

REX AND ANN COLLINS JAZZ SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship was established by Rex and Ann Collins to further solidify the WIU Jazz Studies Program as the premier jazz program in the region. Ann Collins earned her graduate and undergraduate degree from WIU and taught in the School of Music for 29 years before retiring in 1997. She served as the Chair of the Department of Music for 9 years. This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen demonstrating significant talent in jazz on bass, guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, or percussion. Student must participate in at least two School of Music ensembles. Amount varies.

THE ANN COLLINS JAZZ PIANO SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in May 2003 by Ann and Rex Collins. Ann Collins is Professor Emeritus of Music and served as Chair of the department before her retirement in 2003. She earned her BS in music and MA in music from WIU. Recipients must demonstrates significant musical talent in jazz piano performance, be a major or minor and earn at least a 3.0 GPA. Amount varies.

THE DALE HOPPER JAZZ STUDIES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2003 at the request of Debra Miller. In 2005, additional monies were added to the fund from the memorial of Dale Hopper upon his passing. This fund was endowed in hopes of honoring Dale in perpetuity. He was a legendary director of the WIU band and jazz program. Recipients must be a music major, and demonstrate significant musical talent in jazz performance and excellent service to WIU jazz ensembles. Amount varies.
