Symphony Orchestra WIU Symphony Orchestra

The WIU Symphony Orchestra performs the major masterworks of the symphonic repertoire, lesser-known orchestral works and contemporary music. Recent concerts have included symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, Schumann, and Schubert, as well as numerous overtures, concerti and other works ranging the Baroque Period to the 21st Century. The Symphony Orchestra sponsors the Annual School of Music Concerto/Aria/Composition Competition where the winners perform with the orchestra. The Director of Orchestras also regularly invites WIU faculty members and guest artists to appear with the orchestra. Dr. Hughey has also regularly invited international guest soloists to appear with the orchestra and hold masterclasses for WIU music students. The annual Halloween Concert is also a favorite of WIU students and the community alike. The WIU Symphony also serves annually for the School of Music opera productions. Other highlights include a recent concert with the rock band KANSAS. Three to four concert programs a semester are prepared and performed.

All WIU students are welcome to audition for membership in the Orchestra, regardless of major.
