Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) is the international honor society in geography and earth science. Gamma Theta Upsilon was founded in 1928 and became a national organization in 1931. The Beta Gamma Chapter at WIU was chartered in 1953. Since then, the chapter has had an outstanding history of participation by both undergraduate and graduate students. GTU sponsors activities that support geography knowledge and awareness. To be eligible, students must have completed at least nine hours of geography courses with at least a 3.0 gpa. Student Society of Geography (formerly the Geography Club) was established to promote student awareness of geography and provide for student involvement in a variety of activities related to geography. SSG and GTU sponsor a lecture series, numerous field trips, and other activities of interest. Membership is open to all students in good academic standing who are interested in geography, regardless of major.
