A survey of our alumni showed that nearly all of our graduates have gone on to a gainful career. Some have become employed through departmental contacts; others through a departmental internship; some through our job listings, and still others have found employment on their own. Most of our recent graduates are employed as geology professionals in the related areas of environmental geology, hydrogeology, and engineering geology.

Environment Geology and Hydrogeology

Several of our most recent graduates are listed below. They are involved in projects such as water well design, chemical analysis of lakes and groundwater, dewatering projects for tunnels and other subsurface excavations, designing wells to monitor pollution at Federal Superfund hazardous waste sites, and many other pollution monitoring projects.

  • Jason W. (B.S. '07) works for an environmental firm in the Chicago area
  • Andy W. (B.S. '07) works for an environmental firm in the Cincinnati area
  • Rob B. (B.S. '06) works for an environmental firm in Colorado
  • Melinda S. (B.S. '03) works for the Illinois EPA
  • Will S. (B.S. '03) works for the Illinois EPA
  • Jacqueline S. (B.S. '01) is a project manager for ETIC Engineering, Inc., Pasadena, California
  • Kim M. (B.S. '00) works for the Illinois EPA

Petroleum Geology

Employment by the petroleum industry has increased over the past few years. Our graduates who went on to pursue their Master's level training in oil-related fields such as geophysics and seismic stratigraphy have found employment with major oil companies.

  • Andy B. (B.S. '04, M.S. Utah State University), Anadarko Oil Company
  • Scott K. (B.S. '01, M.S. Oklahoma University), Marathon Oil Company
  • Kristen S. (B.S. '00, M.S. Northern Arizona University), Shell Oil Company

Miscellaneous

Because geology can be applied to many diverse areas, recent graduates have found a wide variety of interesting professions.

  • Quintin O. (B.S. '03, M.S. University of Tennessee), Stillwater Mining Company in Montana
  • Katy M. (B.S. '02) works for the Oil and Gas Department, Garfield County, Colorado

Graduate School

Approximately half of our majors continue their studies in graduate school. Currently the following students are working toward M.S. or Ph.D. degrees:

  • Nathan W. (B.S. '07), University of Illinois
  • Stephen A. (B.S. '06), Colorado School of Mines
  • Neil S. (B.S. '05), Southern Illinois University
  • Dan R. (B.S. '05), University of Arizona
  • Ginny R. (B.S. '04), University of New Mexico
  • Elizabeth G. (B.S. '04), Southern Illinois University
