Michaela Rae Romano Scholarship Awardees

Congratulations to Allison Carlsen, Nicholas Lawton, Nicole Steinbaugh and Claire Possin (not pictured) for being awarded the Michaela Rae Romano Scholarships!

The Michaela Rae Romano Scholarship is given annually to students excelling in degree programs offered by the College of Arts & Sciences at Western Illinois University – Quad Cities.  Gifts of the College faculty, these awards are offered every spring to two undergraduate and two graduate students to honor their academic commitment and to assist their completion of degree work in the coming semester or year.

Presented since 2009, these scholarships were named in 2015 in remembrance of Michaela Rae Romano (1988-2015), daughter of Western Illinois University professors of biology Michael and Susan Romano.  A cum laude graduate of Knox College with a major in Anthropology-Sociology and a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies, Michaela was an exemplary student of the liberal arts and sciences.  At Knox, she received the Academic Achievers Scholarship and Howell Atwood Award and was an active member of Students against Sexism in Society and the Chinese Club.  Michaela subsequently completed a Chinese Language Certificate at Beloit College and taught English in China.
