America Reads

Big Brothers, Big Sisters

Mission:
The Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and others to build the critical network of support that funds and enables our work of carefully matching children with compassionate adult mentors and providing ongoing support to the child, volunteer mentor, and child’s family.
Opportunities:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest and most comprehensive mentoring organization in the world. Volunteering involves mentoring a child aged anywhere from six to eighteen. We offer 2 programs, Community-based and School-based.
- The Community-based program is the more traditional mentoring relationship, where the match decides its own activities and can meet wherever, whenever. Community-based matches meet a minimum of 8 hours per month.
- School-based matches meet primarily in-school, during the lunch/recess period. School-based meetings last about 40 minutes, and the match can play games, do activities, do homework, play at recess, eat lunch, and/or just talk and be friends.
- There are monthly match activities outside the school which both the Community-based and School-based (with parent approval) matches can come to, though those activities are not mandatory. School-based matches meet a minimum of once per week, with no meetings during the school breaks. Bigs and Littles are matched with their own gender only, based on compatibility of personalities and similar interests.
Time Commitment:
Volunteers must make a minimum 1-year commitment so that a strong and trusting bond can be created with the child. Matching Process: Potential volunteers go through a vetting process before they are allowed to be matched with a Little. This involves a 90-minute interview with BBBS Staff, background checks, reference calls, internet searches, and a 90-minute training class. During the interview, questions are asked about the volunteer’s work experience, background, family life, and interactions with children to get an idea of what kind of person the volunteer is and to see if they are qualified and appropriate for BBBS. Likewise, the potential children and their parents sit for a 90-minute interview, during which the Staff collects info about background, needs, preferences, and interests so we can make the best possible matches.
Requirements:
- You must be available for an entire year. Community-based meets year-round; School-based does not meet during the breaks, but if you are matched in [for example] November 2016 you must continue until at least November 2017.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must have a driver’s license.
- You must not have any criminal background. We will also run your Motor Vehicle Record, and anything serious may mean disqualification.
- You MUST fulfill the commitment you make to the child. Many kids in the BBBS program have faced adversity throughout their lives; seeing one more person give up or walk out on them only compounds whatever issues they may be facing.
- You must have semi-regular contact with BBBS Staff. For the volunteers, this will amount to a monthly phone call, which can last as little as 5 minutes. It is these monthly calls that allow the Staff to support the match and child, ensure the safety of all involved, and facilitate the child getting whatever he/she needs.
- BBBS reserves the right to accept or deny any potential volunteer or child it chooses.

Birthright offers love, hope and support to each woman, to help her make a realistic plan for her future and the future of her unborn child. Time Commitment:
Since volunteers must undergo training, a weekly commitment is expected.
Requirements:
Must be a female student with either junior or senior status. An application must be picked up from the office and filled out. All volunteers need to go through training as well.

McDonough District Hospital
