Scholarships for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Carl B. Larson Scholarship in Archeology

Criteria:

Junior or senior Anthropology major in good standing who demonstrates an interest in archaeology as a career and must have completed the WIU archaeological field school (ANTH 325 & ANTH326). Minimum GPA  of 3.0.

Terms:

Amount of award up to $1,000, awarded in the fall through EFT. The award will be made during the alternate years that an archaeological field school is taught during the summer session, or when there are eligible students, according to the above criteria. In the event the award committee finds two equally worthy candidates, the award may be split with $500 to each student.

Additional Comments:

Applicants will submit an essay (250-500 words) discussing why archaeology is relevant today and why they are considering it as a career. The essay should include discussion of how the archaeological field school experience contributed to their development and career goals. Applicants should also include a letter or recommendation from the instructor who taught them in the field school.

Harriet Stull Memorial Fund

Criteria:

  • Sociology major
  • Sophomore class level or higher
  • Evidence of leadership in department, college, university and/or community activities

Terms:

Award amount varies based on annual interest of the endowment and is applied to the student's university account

Selection Process:

Members of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology Scholarship Selection Committee will make the final decision

Kara Leigh Broughton Memorial Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Sociology major or Law Enforcement and Justice Administration major
  • Junior of senior class level
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Enrolled full-time
  • 300-500 word essay required

Terms:

This scholarship alternates between LEJA (even years) and Sociology (odd years). Award amount is based on interest earnings on the endowment but should be a minimum of $1,000, applied to the student's university account

Selection Process:

Selection of the recipient will include the appropriate department chair in consultation with the donor.

The Sociological Masters Scholarship

Criteria:

Graduate Scholarship:

  • The primary recipient of the scholarship will be a graduate student in Sociology in good academic standing (GPA 3.00+)
  • The recipient should have completed SOC518, Classical Theory with no less than a grade of "A" and either SOC531, Quantitative Research Methods or SOC535, Qualitative Research Methods with no less than a grade of "B"
  • The recipient should submit a statement indicating how they plan to use their sociological skills upon completion of their Master's Degree in Sociology
  • Special consideration will be given to students of Polish ancestry

Terms:

$1,000 annually

Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed and recipients will be selected by the Recruitment and Retention Committee in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
