MACOMB, IL – South Elgin High School senior Mario Calero, of Elgin, IL, has been selected for Western Illinois University's Centennial Honors Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, fees and a residence hall room at the school.

High school students with an ACT score of 32 or higher and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the scholarship.

At WIU, Calero plans to major in broadcasting with a sports emphasis, and is interested in weight lifting, swimming and playing racquetball.

"WIU offers a phenomenal broadcasting program with the sports emphasis and the on-air and crew opportunities far exceed any other schools," Calero said. "The scholarship and the Amtrak line to Chicago solidified my decision."

In high school, Calero was active in football, the National Honor Society and BEACON Academy, his high school's broadcasting program.

After graduation, Calero hopes to enter the broadcasting field, whether it be from news reporting to sports direction or camera producing.
