LGBTQA Week Celebrated at WIU April 15-20

MACOMB, IL -- The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer and Allies (LGBTQA) Resource Center at Western Illinois University and the UNITY campus organization will celebrate LGBTQA Awareness Week Monday, April 15 through Saturday, April 20 on the WIU-Macomb campus.

The annual celebration serves as an opportunity to educate students, faculty and staff and to celebrate the progression of equality. The week's schedule of events includes:

Monday, April 15
"Guess Who's Gay?," 7-9 p.m., Morgan Hall 101A
Do you think you have a good "gaydar?" This panel of students will keep you guessing. Gay? Lesbian? Bisexual? Trans*? Straight? Asexual? You be the judge.

Tuesday, April 16
Open Mic Night, 7-9 p.m., Café Aroma
Express your creativity and listen to others' talents. Showcase your musical, poetic and/or comedic talents for the LGBTQA community.

Wednesday, April 17
"Out For Lunch," noon-1 p.m., University Union Fox Room
Interested in learning more about the LGBTQA community? Attend this interactive panel comprised of LGBTQA-identified students.

Movie showing, "Pariah," 7-10 p.m., Morgan Hall 101B
A Brooklyn teenager juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak and family in a desperate search for sexual expression.

Thursday, April 18
"Coming Out," 6:30-8:30 p.m., Union Sandburg Lounge
Learn about the issues surrounding the coming out process and its importance. Volunteers will share their coming out stories.

Friday, April 19:
"NoH8" Photo Shoot, noon-4 p.m., Union Violet Room
Bring your white t-shirt and get your photo taken for the NoH8 Campaign. Photos are free and will be e-mailed to students.

Amateur Drag Show, 8:30-10:30 p.m., Bay-Henn Underground
Do you love drag? Bring your dollar bills for a night of fun.

Saturday, April 20
Equality Ball, 6-9 p.m., Multicultural Center
Join us to celebrate equality for all individuals. There will be a buffet dinner, keynote speakers and a dance to follow. RSVP to unity@wiu.edu by April 15.

LGBTQA Awareness Week is sponsored by the LGBTQA Resource Center, Unity, Council on Student Activities Funds and the University Committee on Sexual Orientation.
