WIU Offers Youth Summer Camps in Science, Art, Filmmaking and Math

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will offer students from fourth grade through high school a hands-on learning experience through numerous youth summer camps, Discovering the World Through Science, Art for Gifted and Talented Students, Adventures in Filmmaking and Girls Plus Math, in June and July.
Discovering the World Through Science – June 9-14
The camp, available for students who have completed at least one year of high school, offers the opportunity to participate in an active learning experience working directly with WIU faculty and department chairs in Western's laboratories and field stations. Disciplines focused on include biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, neuroscience, geography (meteorology), nursing and physics. Registration is limited and is $475, which includes tuition, classroom supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and meals.
Art for Gifted and Talented Students – June 16-21, grades 4-6; June 23-28, grades 6-8
Art camp, under the guidance of WIU art faculty, local artists and their assistants, allows students to participate in studies in drawing and painting, airbrush, computer art and three-dimensional expression. Registration is limited. The residential fee is $445, which includes tuition, art and computer supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and meals. The commuter fee is $395, available to participants who live within 30 miles of WIU, and includes tuition, art and computer supplies, extra curricular activities and the noon meal.
Adventures in Filmmaking – July 14-19
Under the guidance of WIU Associate Director of University Television Mark Dial, students will have the chance to participate in all aspects of producing a film—from script to screen, including story development, script breakdown, casting, lighting, shooting and editing. The summer camp is open to high school freshman, sophomores and juniors. Registration is limited and is $525, which includes tuition, supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and meals.
Girls Plus Math – July 21-26
Open for girls ages 11 to 13, math camp offers participants the opportunity to explore critical thinking skills; web page creation; Polynomiography computer software, which allows users to create art through mathematical equations; biographies on women who have excelled in math and science; various math concepts, including linear equations, polynomials, graphing and Pascal's Triangle; Venn diagrams; quadratic equations and polyhedra. Hands-on components include building a tetrahedral kite, origami and various games that foster critical thinking skills. Registration is limited and is $499, which includes tuition, classroom supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and meals.
