Western Courier Brings Home Eight Awards from ICPA

MACOMB, IL – The Western Courier, the student-run newspaper at Western Illinois University, earned eight awards at the Illinois College Press Association's annual convention on Feb. 21-22 in Chicago.
"I'm so proud of the staff of the Western Courier," said Rich Moreno, director of Student Publications and adviser to the Courier. "The staff works so hard throughout the year, so it's great for them to be recognized for their efforts."
Western Courier staff members who earned awards included:
- Mary Friday, junior, communications (Macomb) – First place in the Shoot Chicago Photo Contest
- Carrie Carlson, junior, emergency management (Oak Forest, IL) – Second place for Best Photo Essay
- Garrick Hodge, senior, broadcasting (Zion, IL); Aaron Viner, senior, broadcasting (Eldridge, IA); and Nicholas Stewart, junior, meteorology (Chicago) – Second place for Best Sports Page Design
- Sandra Sepaniak, senior, journalism and Spanish (Geneseo, IL) – Second place for Best Non-Film Review
- James Needham, graduate, journalism (Ware, MO) – Third place for Best Feature Story
- Aaron Viner – Honorable Mention for Best Sports News Story
- Garrick Hodge – Honorable Mention for Best Sports Feature Story
- Elana Katz, senior, fashion merchandising (Anaheim, CA); Steve Lutz, senior, journalism (Cedar Rapids, IA); and Garrick Hodge – Honorable Mention for Best Editorial
The ICPA membership includes 34 college and university papers in Illinois. ICPA awards were judged by a panel of professional newspaper journalists from papers throughout the state.
