WIUS Broadcasting Students Honored at NY Conference

MACOMB, IL – Three Western Illinois University broadcasting students who work with the WIUS campus radio station received awards during the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Golden Microphone Award competition, held March 8 in New York City.

The awards ceremony was part of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System's (IBS) annual conference.

WIU junior Juan Reyes, of Burbank, IL, received first place in the competition, being recognized in the category of "Best Artist/Celebrity Interview." He interviewed the band Love and Theft for his show, "Tuning Room Live."

Other students receiving awards for being finalists in the competition include WIU senior Dave Mitchell, of Riverside, IL, for "Best Promotion Director," and Reyes, along with WIU junior Jeff Marta, of Lisle, IL, for "Best Fundraising/Underwriting Campaign." Reyes, who serves as the station's alternative music director, was also nominated for "Best News Interview."

Mitchell serves as the station's promotions director, and Marta is the sports director.

In addition to the awards, two of the students gave a presentation at the conference titled, "How to Make a College Radio Station Successful."
