MACOMB, IL -- The City of Macomb's emergency simulation exercise has concluded. While the exercise is over, emergency officials suggest avoiding the impacted area due to possible traffic congestion.

City of Macomb Emergency Drill Update [Posted 10:20 a.m., 2/21]

MACOMB, IL – The City of Macomb's emergency simulation event has resumed this morning (Saturday). Today's simulated event surrounds an explosion at Whalen Manufacturing, 1270 E. Murray St., in Macomb. It is anticipated that the simulation will conclude at approximately 4 p.m. today. Emergency officials suggest avoiding the impacted area because of possible traffic.

The WIU Macomb campus remains open. See the wiu.edu for more information and updates.

MACOMB, IL -- The initial emergency exercise incident, which "affected" 220 structures, has been mitigated, according to City of Macomb officials. The exercise will resume tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with a new drill/incident at an alternate location, which is not necessarily connected to today's event. The WIU Macomb campus remains open. MACOMB, IL -- A train has derailed near the West Central Farm Service Plant on the west side of Macomb. Avoid the area until further notice. The WIU Macomb campus remains open. See the wiu.edu for more information and updates.

City of Macomb Emergency Exercise [Posted 8:30 a.m. 2/20]

NOTE: Western Illinois University will send an emergency alert notice via email and text to notify the campus community of the drill and that the event taking place is not an actual emergency.

From City of Macomb:

MACOMB, IL -- First responders from the City of Macomb will collaborate with other local and regional emergency services units in a full-scale emergency preparedness exercise Friday-Saturday, Feb. 20-21.

Macomb Fire, Police and Public Works personnel, along with support from the Macomb City/McDonough County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA), McDonough District Hospital, Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety, the WIU Department of Emergency Management, the WIU Office of the Vice President for Administrative Services, a chemical response unit of the Illinois Army National Guard and national disaster support staff from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway will participate in the two-day training exercise.

The exercise, which will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 20, and from 7 a.m. until mid-afternoon Feb. 21, will simulate the release of a hazardous chemical and will be staged at two locations in the city. One site will be near the West Central Farm Service (FS) Plant on the west side of Macomb and the second site will be near the Whalen Manufacturing Plant on Hemp Rd., on the east side of Macomb.
