MACOMB, IL – Through the second annual dance marathon, students at Western Illinois University raised more than $51,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, far surpassing the $40,000 goal for the event. Last year's event raised $22,000.

The event, a yearlong campaign to raise money and awareness, brought in $51,883 this year for St. Louis Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.

The 12-hour dance marathon honors the 12-hour shifts of doctors and nurses, as well as children who are unable to stand.

"Words cannot express how proud we are of the WIU Dance Marathon leadership team, as well as the WIU students who participated in the event," said Ashley Katz, Dance Marathon advisor for internal relations. "The success of this event would not have been possible without the team of passionate students that we had working day in and day out on this event. In addition to the leadership team, we had a wonderful crew of individuals who volunteered and donated their services to the event. This was a wonderful display of not only collaboration, but a generous display of service from the WIU campus community."

Katz said planning is already underway for WIU's third annual Dance Marathon, which is scheduled for March 26, 2016, in the University Union Grand Ballroom.
