WIU Bass Fishing Team Sending Duo to National Championship for Fourth Year

MACOMB, IL – For the fourth consecutive year, two members of the Western Illinois University Bass Fishing Team have qualified to compete in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship July 9-11.

On Saturday, the WIU team of Kit Benson and Wes Lashmett, a sophomore agriculture major from Winchester, IL, finished in eighth place in the Bassmaster College Series Midwest Regional. The pair caught 15 fish, weighing a total of 35 pounds and 12 ounces, during the three-day event in Lacrosse, WI.

Two other two-person teams from the WIU Bass Fishing Team also competed in the Midwest Regional event. The team of Craig Wise, a Spring 2015 law enforcement and justice administration graduate from Oakwood Hills, IL, and Jackson Grabeel, a 2015 construction management graduate from Taylor Ridge, IL, finished 22nd with 10 fish weighing a total of 22 pounds and 12 ounces, and the team of Brian Lafferty, a senior physical education major from LaHarpe, and Sam Wheeler, a senior physical education major from Bloomington, IL, finishing 73rd with a total of four fish weighing a total of seven pounds, 13 ounces.

The national championship tournament will be held at Lake DuBay on the Wisconsin River.
