June 26, 2015

Dear University Community:

This week the Illinois General Assembly began sending appropriations bills to the Governor for his signature. This included Western Illinois University's appropriation bill (HB4148). On Thursday, June 25, the Governor vetoed Western's appropriation bill, along with all other higher education bills. We must now wait to see if the General Assembly will consider legislation to override the Governor's veto, or if this will be a catalyst for new budget discussions in Springfield. We will continue to work with both the Governor and the General Assembly to assist in solving the State's financial difficulties.

As we wait for Western's Fiscal Year 2016 budget, our University continues to prepare for the new fiscal year. As I stated in the June 19, 2015 budget update, we will postpone the decision on non-negotiated salary increases, and we have begun implementing the necessary budget reductions. As more information becomes available, we will communicate with the University community.

We greatly appreciate your understanding and patience under these circumstances.

Sincerely,

Jack Thomas
President
Western Illinois University
