MACOMB/MOLINE IL -- Western Illinois University administrators, faculty and students and labor leaders, along with community leaders and private and community college administrators and students, will host a joint press event at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19 in the University Union Brattain Lounge on the Macomb campus and at 3 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Quad Cities Riverfront campus, rooms 103-104 to share how the ongoing budget impasse is affecting campuses and communities in the region and throughout the state, and to urge lawmakers to fund higher education.

The groups coming together at the Feb. 19 events represent the Illinois Coalition to Invest in Higher Education, a recently formed statewide advocacy group whose organizers are hosting similar events across the state this month.

Illinois universities and colleges have gone eight months without a budget, which has affected MAP grants and operational funding. The coalition kicked off its push in January with a statehouse news conference. Local events are being held throughout the state this month to raise awareness of the funding crisis and to continue to build support for higher education.

Coalition membership represented at the Feb. 19 events include:

Public and private colleges and universities: WIU, Quincy University, Knox College, Monmouth College, and Augustana College
Community colleges: Spoon River College, John Wood Community College, Carl Sandburg College, and Black Hawk College
University and college employees and retirees
Students
Business and labor organizations/leaders: Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development, City Leaders/Mayors, UPI
