MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees voted to keep the 2017-2018 tuition rate level at its Dec. 16 Board meeting on the Macomb campus.

At the December 2015 meeting, the Board voted to reduce undergraduate tuition by three percent. The 2017-2018 tuition rate for incoming domestic undergraduate students will remain at last year's rate of $8,541 annually ($284.70 per credit hour, based on 30 credit hours). The 2017-2018 tuition rate for new graduate students will remain unchanged at $323.64 per credit hour.

"We will not allow reduced state funding to become a tuition burden on our students. We are dedicated to providing educational opportunities for all citizens, and we will remain an affordable public higher education institution," noted President Jack Thomas. "We continue to be the only University in the state that provides the guaranteed cost structure for all student expenses, including room, meal plan, tuition and fees. This allows students and their families to have a more stable financial plan for a college education. Students deserve access to the quality education Western Illinois University provides."

The 2017-2018 Cost Guarantee rates (fees, room and meal plan) will be considered at the March 2017 Board meeting. The WIU Cost Guarantee program ensures that students will pay the same rate for tuition, fees, room and meal plan for their four years of continuous enrollment. Western's Cost Guarantee is the only public university program in Illinois that provides no increases in room and meal plan, in addition to the Illinois statutory requirement of guaranteed four-year tuition rates. Western Illinois also offers the Cost Guarantee to graduate students enrolled in a degree program, as well as to transfer students earning an associate's degree.

The Board also approved the WIU Internal Auditing Charter, and heard reports on enrollment, retention and graduation rates, FY17 performance, facility assessment, the FY17 master plan update and the mayors and high schools' summits.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held March 30-31, 2017, in Macomb.
