MOLINE, IL - - A Western Illinois University-Quad Cities educational and fundraising event focusing on the prothonotary warbler, a small songbird that has recently been designated as a "species of concern," will take place from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at Nahant Marsh Education Center, 4220 Wapello Ave. in Davenport.

Donations go to a prothonotary project being conducted at Nahant Marsh, a collaborative effort between WIU-Quad Cities professors Brian Peer, (biology) and Rob Porter (recreation, parks, and tourism administration, RPTA) and their students, to create habitat for, and conduct research on, prothonotary warblers.

The event will feature a variety of prothonotary warbler-themed activities for adults and families. Peer, an expert on ornithology, will provide a lecture on the prothonotary warbler at 9 a.m.

Donations to the project are welcome and appreciated.

"The prothonotary warbler has been designated as a ‘species of concern, because its numbers are declining due to wetland habitat loss," Peer explained. "The program will introduce participants to the migratory and breeding behaviors of this bird, and let them know how they can help protect this ‘jewel of the swamp.' We will be netting birds, and participants will have a chance to see live birds up close (and possibly a prothonotary or other warbler)."

The event will also include children's activities, a silent auction and mist netting birds.

The event is co-sponsored by the WIU-Quad Cities Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration (RPTA) and Nahant Marsh.

For more information on the event, contact Rob Porter at (309) 762-3999 ext. 62355.
