WIU-QC to Offer “Math on the Mississippi” Summer Camp

MOLINE- Western Illinois University-Quad Cities will offer "Math on the Mississippi," an interactive summer enrichment program, from June 18-22 for grades 4-6, and June 25-29 for grades 6-8. The program will be held at the WIU-QC campus, 3300 River Drive, Moline.

This program is designed to introduce participants to science and math concepts in a hands-on learning environment that will expand their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun and engaging way.

Program coordinators and instructors include professors from the WIU-QC math and physics departments as well as STEM professionals. Daily topics include earth space science, buoyancy, pressure, indirect measurement, and statistics. Along with brainteasers and study trips to Lock and Dam 15, Black Hawk State Park, and Sylvan Slough, participants use a daily blog to detail what they have learned throughout the program.

Enrollment is limited to 24 participants per session. Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration fee is $275 and includes classroom instruction, supplies, lunch, and field trips. A minimum $100 deposit is due upon registration.

The program is sponsored by Western Illinois University's School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics.
