MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Community Art Program will be presented on Sundays, from March 25–April 22, at the West Central Illinois Arts Center and Garwood Hall on the WIU campus.

The free program is for students in first - eighth grades. Classes will be held March 25, April 8, April 15 and April 22 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. and from 3 – 4:30 p.m.

First and Second Grades: Exploring Art With The Masters

This unit focuses on the work of four famous artists, Kandinsky, Pollock, Van Gogh and Picasso. Besides learning a brief history of the artists, students will have the opportunity to create artworks base on these artists' techniques and styles. Students will be able to explore various mediums and methods, including drip painting, acrylic paint, watercolor, and marker through these four lessons.

Third and Fourth Grades: Art in Nature

This unit will help children explore their relationship with nature and discover the importance of developing knowledge of patterns, texture, color theory and colors found in nature. The students will explore color and texture by making the insect collage. Then the students will follow by exploring movement and balance with the three-dimensional leaf mobile. The landscape piece will allow the students to have a better understanding of color theory and texture. Lastly, the printmaking project will allow the students to create their own editions, focusing on the patterns in nature.

Fifth-Eighth Grades: Elements and Techniques of Art

This unit will focus on the use of formal elements and techniques of art through the learning about the history of artists, such as Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt and Andy Warhol. The young artists will also gain knowledge on new techniques, vocabularies and artists to recreate similar works in relation. In addition, they will also have the opportunity to explore different styles with different media, such as painting, carving and printing and learn how to effectively use the visual elements for their creation.
