MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Communication will host its 26th annual Wayne N. Thompson Professor Lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the University Union Sandburg Theatre.

The lecture, "How Ironic Are You?: A Look at a Sense of Irony," will be delivered by WIU Associate Professor of Communication Joshua Averbeck. The lecture is open free to the public.

Averbeck received his bachelor's degree in general science from North Central College, his master's degree in communication from WIU and his doctoral degree in communication from the University of Oklahoma. He began teaching at WIU in 2012, and teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in persuasion, language, health communication, interpersonal communication and research methods.

In addition to his teaching, Averbeck's research has been extensively published in a variety of communication journals, and he has served on the editorial boards of several journals and spoken at numerous conferences. He has also served as the coordinator of the WIU Department of Communication's graduate program since 2014.

The Wayne N. Thompson Lecture is named to honor WIU alumnus Wayne Thompson, who was a nationally-recognized professor of speech communication, who earned his undergraduate degree at WIU. An endowment in his name helps sponsor a number of department programs to enhance learning and scholarship in the field of communication, including this lecture, and the annual Thompson Lecture, which is presented by a prominent scholar in the field.
