WIU Students Honored at IRHA Conference

MACOMB, IL – Several Western Illinois University students were honored during the Illinois Residence Hall Association (IRHA) Conference Feb. 15-16 in Chicago.

The WIU Inter-Hall Council (IHC) took 12 students to the event. The conference is made up of Illinois schools, and the weekend is dedicated to showing school spirit, attending and presenting programs and showcasing and learning what other schools around the state are doing.

Before the conference, students wrote bids, which are documents highlighting campus and student excellence.

At the conference, Western Illinois University won the following awards (award title followed by winner):

• President of the Year: Killian Tracey, a senior forensic chemistry major, of Geneva, IL

• NRHH Member of the Year: Kylee Fall, a senior biology major, of Somonauk, IL

• NRHH-Communications Coordinator: Matthew Zumwalt, a senior geography and geographic information science major, of Litchfield, IL

• Student of the Year: Shelby Mech, a junior supply chain management major, of Poplar Grove, IL

• First Year Student of the Year: Brooke Barnes, a freshman pre-nursing major, of Plainfield, IL

• Chapter of the Year: The Caroline Grote NRHH Chapter

Additionally, WIU had four different programs submitted to be presented at the conference. The following programs and presenters were awarded as a Top 10 Program, which is one of the 10 best programs of the conference. (Program Title followed by Presenter(s))

• "Escape Room" by Mech and Allison Glover, a junior finance major, of Leland, IL

• "I am a Professional....I Think?" by Greta Dieter, a graduate student in college student personnel, of Oswego, IL

• "S.M.A.R.T-a-Gami" by Kat Davis, a sophomore pre-elementary education major, of Aurora, IL

• "Growing into your True Self" by Barnes

"We are truly proud and blessed to have these extraordinary student leaders on our campus and part of our residence hall communities," said Associate Vice President for Student Services J.B. Biernbaum. "Each year they continue to raise the bar with the programs and experiences they develop and execute within the halls. It is being awarded honors like this that prove and show why WIU has one of the best housing programs in the nation."
