WIU School of Music Presents Annual Competition Concert March 1

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University School of Music will present its annual Concerto/Aria/Composition Competition Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall. The student winners of the 2018 competition will perform with the WIU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by WIU Associate Professor of Music Richard Hughey.
The performance is open free to the public.
The annual Concerto/Aria/Composition Concert features student soloists who are selected as winners of a competition by a panel of external judges. The student soloists represent some of the finest musicians in WIU's School of Music. The program also presents an opportunity to premiere a student composition selected by the University's theory/composition faculty for its artistic and creative merits.
The student winners of the November 2018 competition are:
Elliot Butler – A junior composition major from Arlington, IL. Butler's "Drama for Orchestra No. 6" was recognized as the winner of the collegiate orchestra division of University of Missouri's Composition Competition.
Vlad Hontilă – A senior violin performance major from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Hontila was the winner of the Illinois State 2017 MTNA Young Artist Competition, both as a soloist and as a member of The President's International String Quartet.
Morgan Miller – A senior music education major from Geneseo, IL. She occasionally plays with The Galesburg Symphony Orchestra, as well as various chamber ensembles and church ensembles.

Vltava (The Moldau) - Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884)
Drama for Orchestra, No. 6 (April 2018) - Butler (b. 1998)
Violin Concerto, op. 47, D Minor - Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)

INTERMISSION
Concerto for Clarinet - Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
- Miller, clarinet
Danzón No. 2 - Arturo Marquez (b. 1950)
