MACOMB, IL -- John W. Smith, director of Beu Health Center at Western Illinois University, has been named interim vice president for student services (VPSS), effective today (July 15), according to Martin Abraham, acting president. Former Vice President Ron Williams left the University last month to accept a position out of state.

Smith has served as director of the health center since July 2015, after serving as the center's interim director. Previously, he was the assistant director at Beu from January 2009 until the interim appointment in early 2015.

"John's administrative experience and his knowledge of the institution will allow the division to continue its mission and tradition of providing outstanding services to the students at WIU," Abraham said.

Smith has also served as the compliance specialist in WIU's Office of Sponsored Projects, where he worked to ensure that University-based research met federal guidelines and integrity standards. He has also served as an instructor for WIU's psychology department since 2005. Prior to working at WIU, Smith was a grant director at the University of Illinois, Chicago (Peoria, IL).

"I look forward to working with our outstanding student services staff in my capacity as acting vice president," Smith said. "We have an exemplary team in the division of student services, and we will continue to provide excellent services, programs and extracurricular activities for our students."

Smith received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Western and his master's degree in gerontology from Western. He is a member of the American College Health Association.

The VPSS provides direction and leadership for the delivery of student services in the areas of admissions, health center, campus recreation, student development and success center, cultural centers, financial aid, transit, student activities, student rights, responsibilities and retention initiatives, publications, counseling center, golf course, housing and dining services, university union, childcare, veterans resource center and the women's center.
