MACOMB, IL -- Calling all Western Illinois University students who are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) … Western has the job for you!

Western's Emergency Medical Services (WEMS) provides first-responder services seven days a week to individuals on campus in need of emergency assistance or care. In order to provide the best services available, WEMS needs more certified emergency medical technicians on call, according to Office of Public Safety Cpl. Ted Anderson who serves as the WEMS adviser. An interest meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 in the Corbin-Olson e-classroom.

Each WEMS member works one shift per month and one weekend per month from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on a volunteer basis; however, some talent grants are available. WEMS personnel rest in Olson Hall during their shifts and are dispatched from that location.

"We are currently operating with one EMT on the service each evening, but we would ideally like to have two for each shift," Anderson added. "Serving on Western's EMS is a great way for students to further enhance their practical experiences and make them even more marketable to future employers."

Students who are EMTs who are interested in working for Western's Emergency Medical Services must be in good academic standing, be certified as at least an EMT-B and pass a background check.
Students who are not EMTs, but interested in joining WEMS, will be trained as first responders. For those interested in obtaining EMT certification, a course is available at WIU.

Applications are available at the Office of Public Safety (Mowbray Hall). Individuals interested in applying or receiving more information may also e-mail Anderson at TF-Anderson@wiu.edu.
