MACOMB, IL – A partnership between the AmeriCorps program at Western Illinois University and the new Good Food Collaborative (GFC), in Macomb, has resulted in new service and volunteer opportunities for area students and residents.

GFC delivers free groceries to about 220 McDonough County households weekly, and has been working non-stop since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

Ryan Warren, of the GFC, is also a graduate student in WIU's Sociology program, and part of the Peace Corps Fellows program in the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs. She said that GFC has a service opportunity through the AmeriCorps Program to lead its Mobile Food Pantry

The organization also seeks volunteers to help with preparations for deliveries.

"Generally, at GFC, our volunteers will help us to bag food and prepare them for delivery," said Warren. "We deliver food to the homes of McDonough County residents every Thursday. On Thursdays, we are always in need of people to help load our delivery vehicles, as well as drive some of our delivery routes."

Current GFC volunteers include students from two of Professor Heather McIlvaine-Newsad's Introduction to Cultural Anthropology classes, who are required to complete 10 hours of service learning during the Fall 2021 semester.
