Hoon Retirement Reception Scheduled for July 11

MACOMB, IL – A reception to honor retiring Western Illinois University College of Fine Arts and Communication Interim Dean William "Buzz" Hoon will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 11 in the University Union Lamoine Room.

Hoon began working at WIU in 1991, teaching in WIU's Department of Broadcasting and Journalism, and directing the department's sports broadcasting program. He became chair of the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism in 2013, and was named associate dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication in 2018. He was first named the interim dean of COFAC in July 2018, when William "Billy" Clow was named WIU's interim provost. He served in the interim post a second time from July 2021 until this month.

In addition to his academic work, Hoon created, hosted and produced two video podcasts highlighting the work of program alumni, called, "The 'Necks Chapter," and "Alumni Chats." He also developed a program with ESPN to highlight Athletics at WIU, and to gather valuable experience for broadcasting and journalism students.

After retiring from WIU, Hoon will become dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.

Hoon received his bachelor's degree in communication arts and sciences from WIU in 1986; his master's degree in public communication and broadcasting from WIU in 1991, and his doctoral degree in mass communication and media arts from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, in 2005.
