Latinx Heritage Month Celebrated at WIU

MACOMB, IL – The Casa Latina Cultural Center at Western Illinois University will celebrate the LatinX Heritage Month with a variety of campus events planned from Thursday, Sept. 15-Saturday, Oct. 15.

"Casa Latina is very excited to bring forth a beautiful celebration of The LatinX Culture on campus during LatinX Heritage Month," said Multicultural Graduate Assistant Jose "Juni" Garcia. "We have put together an engaging month filled with educational, cultural, social and interactive events for WIU and the Macomb community to enjoy."

This year's schedule includes:

Thursday, Sept. 15 – noon-2 p.m.: Bring your own Tortilla, on the Multicultural Center lawn – the event will include free food, music and games, co-sponsored by Alpha Psi Lambda

Tuesday, Sept. 20 – 5:30 p.m.: A screening of "Clear and Present Danger," at the Multicultural Center – A movie panel and showing, co-sponsored by the Veterans Resource Center.

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – 7 p.m.: A Juan Gabriel-themed education and karaoke night – "El Divo De Juarez," co-sponsored by the LGBT*QA Resource Center, in collaboration with Lambda Theta Alpha.

Wednesday, Sept. 28 - 2 p.m. at the Multicultural Center: Wednesday with the Women's Center – Breast Cancer Awareness, co-sponsored by the WIU Women's Center and Sigma Lambda Gamma.
- 7 p.m. at the University Union Grand Ballroom: La Loteria Night, co-sponsored by LASO, UUB and the Office of Student Engagement.

• Thursday, Sept. 29 – 2-3 p.m. at the Casa Latina Lounge in the Multicultural Center: Café Y Hablamos, a beginner-friendly space to engage in Spanish conversation regarding family and life experiences.

Thursday, Oct. 6 – 4 p.m. in the Casa Latina Lounge of the Multicultural Center: Pa'Rriba, Pa'Bajo, Pa'L Centro, Mal Intento?, sponsored by Amplify.

Friday, Oct. 7 – 7-11 p.m.: El Baile: Flores, in the Multicultural Center, sponsored by the Latin American Student Organization and the Tradicion Latin Dance Team.

Monday, Oct. 10 – 5 p.m.: Latinidad: Embracing Indigenous Cultures, at the Multicultural Center, co-sponsored by Gamma Phi Omega.

Wednesday, Oct. 12 – 6 p.m.: Power to the Pueblo, at the Multicultural Center, about the Black Panther Party and the Brown Berets, co-sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and Sigma Lambda Beta.
