MACOMB, IL – Following this year's Spring Break, a new space for Western Illinois University students, faculty and staff to relax and interact will open in the lower level of the University Union.

"The 'Neck" will open Monday, March 20, and has a pool table, Nintendo Switch video consoles, large TV's through the space, and lots of seating. The space is open free from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays. Special hours may apply during University breaks.

The project was developed through a partnership between the University Union, the Student Government Association and University Technology. In addition, student survey data collected by students in the Fall 2021 Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration 482 course was used to guide the selection of amenities available in the space.

"The intention of The 'Neck is for informal gatherings between students, faculty and staff - complimenting the mission of the University Union as providing a facility that furthers community growth and success," said University Union Director Ashley Katz. "It has been a great experience working with students and staff to transform this space into a dynamic location for students to interact and engage on campus."

The space utilized for The 'Neck was previously the billiards room in the basement of the University Union.

There are several policies in place for the new space, including that those using the room will be held financially responsible for damaged or lost equipment and food and beverages are allowed inside but all cups must have lids.
