MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Following a national search, Miguel Huerta, Ed.D., has been named director of the First Year Advising Center, effective April 17.

Huerta has served as the Student Support Manager within the Program in Public Health at the University of California Irvine since 2021, after serving as the associate director for the Center for Advising and Academic Success at Whitter College.

"Western Illinois University is lucky to have Miguel joining the Leatherneck family. Our students will benefit greatly from his experiences," said Executive Director of Retention Initiatives Justin Schuch. "Miguel will be critical in our continued development of the First Year Experience program and student advising experience."

As director, Huerta is responsible for the development and supervision of the First Year Advising Team, implementing and enhancing policies, practices and procedures to enhance student success, and collaborating with advising units across campus to ensure the best possible student experience.

"I am excited to join the WIU community and be able to collaborate across the institution," said Huerta. "I am looking forward to contributing in the development of a welcoming environment for all students, especially in the transition to college."

Huerta received his associate's degree from Citrus Community College, his bachelor's degree from the University of California Los Angeles, his master's degree from California State University Fullerton, and completed his doctoral degree in education from California State University Fullerton this spring.
