WIU Social Work Program Students to Present at United High School Wellness Day Dec. 1
November 30, 2023

MACOMB, IL - - Students at Western Illinois University in the Social Work Program will present at the United High School Wellness Day sessions from 8-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at United High School in Monmouth, IL.
The day is an opportunity for students to attend sessions focusing on particular aspects of mental health. At the event, groups, including WIU Social Work Program students, present to high school students and utilize what they've learned in the classroom and put it to practice with their peers while serving their local community.
Last year, WIU students formed two groups focusing on self confidence and self care. United High School has welcomed WIU back this year.
"Last year WIU students did such a wonderful job that everyone wants them back again this year," a representative said.
Experiential learning is an important component to Social Work Program education and having the opportunity to present at Wellness Day provides professional experience to students.
"It demonstrates how WIU is preparing students in a unique way to not only learn information that is useful in the field of social work," WIU Assistant Professor of Health Sciences and Social Work Lori Okon said. "But also learn how to apply the information to help the community and promote their own work in the future."
