MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University community is saddened to learn of the death of WIU junior agriculture major Steven Wright, of Pekin, IL, who passed away April 20.

After graduating from highschool, Wright joined the Army in July 2009. He served 5 years active duty as a Chinese linguist before coming to Western.

"Steven started working at the Veterans Resource Center in the Summer of 2023 as a VA work study student. He was very involved in several different student organizations on campus and was always willing to help any way possible. Steven was a bright light with an infectious laugh who will be deeply missed," VRC Office Manager Sarah Kitch said.

At WIU, Wright was an active member in five clubs, including the Ag Mech Club, Cannabis Club, Student Government Association, Military Appreciation Club and was a founding member and treasurer for the Transfer Student Organization. He also was a recipient of the Fallen Soldiers scholarship for Spring 2024.

"Steven made friends quickly because he gave so much of himself. He had a curious mind with a bright future ahead. We will miss seeing his big smile," said Agriculture Associate Instructor Jana Knupp.

"Steven's smile was contagious. I relied on him for his maturity, and the laughter he brought to Military Appreciation Club meetings. On a personal level, I'm going to miss our morning conversations at Knoblauch Hall," Associate Professor of Recreation, Park, Tourism and Hospitality Jeremy Robinett added.

He enjoyed listening to music, fishing, playing or watching sports, playing cards and board games and walking his dog, LB.

"When we lose a Leatherneck too soon, the WIU community mourns together," WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup said. "We offer our sympathy and support to Steven's family, friends and all who knew him."

A memorial visitation for Wright will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 26 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home & Crematory, 500 North Fourth Street in Pekin. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 2525 S. Skyway Rd. in Bartonville, IL.
