MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Registrar employee and mother, Lori Heagy joined WIU in 2007. While building her career in the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach, she ensured her daughter Emily received the best care and education at the WIU daycare in Horrabin.

In 2014 Heagy achieved a significant milestone, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies.

After some time away, Heagy returned to WIU, finding her place in the Registrar's Office. Meanwhile, Emily followed in her mother's footsteps, beginning her journey at WIU in the Fall of 2022. With a passion for Social Work and Communication, Emily embraced her studies, consistently achieving top grades and maintaining a nearly perfect GPA.

But Emily's story goes beyond academics. She embodies the spirit of WIU, engaging in various activities and always seeking growth opportunities. Her warmth and kindness make her a beloved member of the community and her determination inspires everyone around her.

During a conversation with a friend, Administrative Assistant to the Provost Brenda McConnell, she realized the importance of sharing Emily's incredible journey. With encouragement and Lori's blessing, McConnell reached out to spread the word about Emily—a shining example of the kind of student WIU takes pride in.

In Basco, IL, the Heagy family awaited the next chapter of Emily's journey, filled with hope and anticipation. Emily's story serves as a reminder of the impact education and perseverance can have on many young lives.

As Emily's story spreads, it inspires others to pursue their dreams and make a difference in their communities, just like Emily has done. Her story shows that anything is possible for any student, a Leatherneck or not.
