MACOMB, IL - - The last Friday in September marks American Indian Day in Illinois, a tradition since 1919. Western Illinois University encourages the community to recognize the cultural and historical contributions of Native Americans. Nationally, November is observed as Native American Heritage Month.

The U.S. Federal government recognizes 574 Native American tribes. Both American Indian Day and Native American Heritage Month provide opportunities to learn about the history and continued impact of Native American communities.

WIU encourages visits to the Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewistown, IL, a branch of the Illinois State Museum, which highlights the history of Native Americans who lived in the Missouri Valley for over 12,000 years. The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., also offers extensive exhibits on Native American culture and history.
