Former WIU Chemistry Professor Ben Hughes Passed Away July 8

MACOMB, IL - - Benjamin "Ben" Hughes, 69, a Western Illinois University chemistry professor emeritus, passed away July 8 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL, following a short illness.

Hughes, who was born in Canton, IL, joined the Western Illinois chemistry faculty in 1964 upon earning his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He retired after 36 years of teaching in 2000. Hughes also earned his master's degree (1962) from Iowa State, his bachelor's degree (1959) from Western and he was a graduate of Lewistown (IL) High School.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; four sons; a daughter; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister; and many nieces and nephews.

Hughes was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb, and he was a charter member (1958) of the Zeta Theta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity at WIU.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 12 at Clugston-Tibbets Funeral Home, 303 E. Washington, Macomb. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 13 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1212 W. Calhoun, Macomb. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the following: Wesley United Methodist Church of Macomb; the American Heart Association; or the
Dr. Benjamin Hughes Chemistry Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the WIU Foundation.
