MACOMB, IL – Matt Bierman, director of residential facilities at Western Illinois University, has been named the interim budget director. Bierman will serve part-time in this role, while serving in his current position, during Julie DeWees' appointment as interim vice president of administrative services. DeWees will continue to oversee the budget office.

As director of residential facilities, Bierman is responsible for organizing and monitoring a $40 million budget, organizing room and board rates and monitoring debt service and food services. He also oversees all facilities-related issues for University Housing and Dining Services. The University budget director is responsible for organizing and monitoring the University's $200 million budget. The budget director also plans and coordinates Western's annual operating and capital budgets; determines fiscal year appropriated and auxiliary funds allocations; and submits budget-related requests to the WIU Board of Trustees, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Governor's Office of Management and Budget and the Illinois State Legislature.

"Matt has demonstrated outstanding leadership during his years in housing, and his experience overseeing Western's residential facilities budget allows him to step into this interim role seamlessly," said President Jack Thomas. "As we continue to face budgetary challenges, it is essential to have an individual in this position with University budget experience while our current budget director oversees the administrative services division."

Bierman began his housing career at Western in 1999 as Bayliss-Henninger halls complex director and was named to his current position in 2008.

He is a college student personnel instructor, and he is a member of the Environmental Sustainability Committee, the Disability Resource Center Advisory Committee and the Master Plan Implementation Team. He also serves as chair of the Auxiliary Facilities Systems (AFS) Finance Subcommittee. He is the past president of GLACUHO (Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers) and has received the GLACUHO Service Award for his contributions to the organization. Bierman serves on the Western Illinois Credit Union Board and is a member of the Macomb Balloon Rally Committee.

He received his bachelor's degree (1997) and his Master of Business Administration (2003) from Western.
