Leland Essay Contest

The Leland Essay Contest rewards the best writers in the Western Writing Program. All students in ENG 100, 180, 280, and GH 101 are eligible to enter. This year we are adding a fifth category: multimodal writing. Contest winners are published online and used as readings in many composition courses. Winners in each category get a monetary prize:

  • First place: $150
  • Second place: $100
  • Third place: $50

Current Submission Requirements:

  3. Read the essay contest rules/procedures
  4. Fill out contact information for your submissions
  5. Attach a copy of your completed essay(s) following the requirements (make sure to submit to the appropriate course as indicated on the submission form)
  6. Individuals will be limited one essay per course (one ENG 100/one ENG 180/one ENG 280/one GH 101) plus one essay in the multimodal writing category.
  7. Electronically sign and date the form. Incomplete or unsigned forms will not be processed
  8. Submit this form and your essay(s) by the deadline stated on the submission form
