Black Caucus - Student Mentoring Program

The mission of the Western Illinois University (WIU) Black Caucus is to develop programs to support and enhance the learning environment, provide collaborative opportunities and promote community involvement for students, faculty and staff. Given this responsibility, there is a need for greater support to attract and retain our students.

The WIU Black Caucus mentorship program will assist students with their academic and social transition into the Western Illinois University campus community. Mentors will serve as a resource to students, and help students to identify best-practices as they relate to academic excellence, educational opportunity, personal growth, and social responsibility, the University’s four core values. Mentors can encourage, guide, and support WIU students by providing a continual connection throughout the academic year. Faculty and staff who register as mentors for this program must have a genuine desire to support students as they navigate unfamiliar territory here at WIU. This mentorship program should help students to realize that there are faculty and staff here at WIU that have a genuine concern for them and their ability to succeed in college.
