Mission of the Department of Art

The Mission of the Department of Art at Western Illinois University is to provide quality education in the visual arts, design, art history, and art education; and, to provide leadership, and to promote excellence in teaching, research, and community service.

Western Illinois University has been educating artists and designers since 1903. Our primary goal is to offer a curriculum that meets the personal and professional goals of students in Art Education, Graphic Design, and in Studio Arts. To achieve this goal we offer a supportive faculty, and we are an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Our Studio Arts program includes: Ceramics, Drawing, Metalsmithing/Jewelry, Oil Painting, Watercolor, Intaglio, Lithography, Silkscreen, and Sculpture.

We also offer degrees in Graphic Design, and Art Teacher Certification.

For qualified applicants, we offerScholarships and Talent Grant/Partial Tuition Waivers each semester.

To be considered for an art scholarship, grant or tuition waiver , submission of a Portfolio is required before or by the Important Dates deadlines. All Portfolios for scholarships are to be submitted on a CD as PowerPoint presentations.
